How to identify venomous snakes?

Certain physical characteristics can help identify venomous snakes, but approaching a snake simply because of its appearance is not safe.

What does the head shape reveal?

Many viper species have a broad, triangular-shaped head. However, this trait is not always evident in venomous snakes like cobras and kraits.

Observe the pupils

In some venomous snakes—particularly many vipers—the pupils may appear vertical. However, assuming a snake is venomous based solely on its pupils is not reliable.

The cobra's distinctive hood

When threatened, a cobra can raise the front part of its body and spread its hood. Distinctive markings may also be visible on the hood.

Venom-delivering teeth (Fangs)

Many venomous snakes possess specialized teeth designed to deliver venom. These fangs help inject venom into the prey's body.

Identification via bite marks? Be careful!

Identifying a snake based on bite marks is not a reliable method. Treat any snakebite as potentially venomous and seek immediate medical attention.

Pit organ: A heat-sensing sensor

Pit vipers have a specialized pit located between the eye and the nostril. This organ helps sense surrounding heat and is useful for locating prey.

Color and body patterns

Some venomous Indian snakes feature distinctive body patterns. Examples include the white bands on a krait and the blotchy pattern on a Russell's viper.

Hissing and warning sounds

When threatened, some snakes may emit loud hissing sounds or other specific noises. If you hear such sounds, immediately move away from the snake.

Safety is more important than identification

Do not attempt to catch a snake or get close to identify it. Maintain a safe distance, and in the event of a bite, go to a hospital or seek professional medical help immediately.
