Choose a growing method:
Tomatoes can be grown in pots, grow bags or directly in the garden. The container should be 12-18 inches deep with proper drainage.
Prepare the soil
The soil should be well-drained and rich in nutrients. It should have a pH of 6.0-6.8. Add a slow-release fertilizer specifically designed for vegetables.
Planting TomatoesFrom Seed:Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in the soil 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Keep the soil moist and warm (70-80°F). Germination takes 5-10 days.
From Seedlings:
Buy healthy plants from a nursery and plant them, burying 2/3 of the stem deeply.
Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Do not wet the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Fertilizing:
Feed it with a balanced fertilizer or compost rich in phosphorus and potassium to promote fruit growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, it promotes foliage rather than fruit production.
Pruning and maintenance:
Keep pests such as aphids, whiteflies or hornworms at bay. Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
Harvesting:
Harvest the tomatoes when they are fully colored and slightly firm.
