Learn how to Grow Mushrooms at Home in 9-Step

Mushrooms thrive in dark and humid environments. So choose a location that has both. A basement, closet, or garage is ideal. Make sure the temperature is consistently between 55-75°F (13-24°C).

Many nurseries offer mushroom kits that come with everything you need to grow mushrooms, including spawn and a growing medium. You can grow oyster mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, or even white button mushrooms.

Create a growing environment according to the kit's instructions. This will require you to keep the area moist often.

Carefully open the kit and add the spawn to the growing medium.

Most mushrooms grow in the dark, but some, like shiitake mushrooms, need indirect light. Check the kit to find out which one you have.

Mushrooms need high humidity to grow. So keep the mushrooms in a place where the humidity level remains between 80-90%.

When the mushrooms are fully matured, gently cut them by bending them at the base.

Clean the cut mushrooms with a damp cloth. You can store them in the refrigerator for up to a week.
