Onion sets are small pre-grown bulbs, and they are the easiest option for beginners.

Growing onions requires the following materials:

  • Onion sets or bulbs
  • Pots or garden soil
  • A garden bed or container with drainage

Method of growing onion

  1. Onions require full sunlight to grow. For this, choose a place where the plants get 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
  2. Choose well-drained soil rich in organic matter to grow it.
  3. Loosen the soil to a 6-8 inches depth to grow the plants.
  4. Add compost or well-rotted manure to increase the nutrients in the soil.
  5. Place each onion bulb about 1 inch deep in the soil, with the pointed end facing upwards.
  6. Keep the plants at a distance of 4-6 inches so that they get good space for growth.
  7. Keep a distance of 12 inches between each row.
  8. After planting the plants, pour water into the soil to help the bulbs settle.
  9. Keep the plant’s soil moist but do not let it get waterlogged.
  10. Remove weeds regularly so that the plants can get all the nutrients and the plants grow well.
  11. The green tops can be harvested for scallions after 3-4 weeks.
  12. Onions can usually be harvested 3-4 months after planting when the green leaves turn yellow and fall off.
  13. After harvesting, allow the onions to dry in a warm, airy place for 1-2 weeks before storing.

  2. Now place the root end in a small glass filled with water to cover the roots. Change the water every 2-3 days.
  3. Now plant the bottom of this onion directly in a pot of soil with the root end down and cover it lightly with soil.
  4. Place this container in a sunny spot and water lightly to keep the soil or roots moist.
  5. After a few weeks, you will see that the onion plant has grown and green leaves have started coming out. You can also remove this green onion at this time and use it to make a variety of dishes.
  6. If the onions are kept for a few more months, they will grow larger after which you can remove them.
